I’ve been monitoring 3 web hosts I’ve heard good things about with mon.itor.us. Over the past 3 months, the one that seems like it should be the best has been doing the worst. The only explanation I can think of is packet shaping giving pings lower priority. In order shown: MediaTemple.net. Dreamhost.com, ImHosted.com. Both the MediaTemple and Dreamhost accounts are on shared servers.

hosting workshop – what is a host and what do they do

Yesterday I hosted a workshop about hosting and community producing on (and across) the increasingly prolific number of services which are available, in contrast to those we know and love (i.e. message boards and blogs). I’ve created notes of the text.

Black text is what I feel the golden rules of hosting anywhere are. Green text is text that we added during the workshop, which is about specific services. The idea was to compare and contrast to see whether the role of community managers is changing.

It seemed to me that the golden rules are still the same, but some things are more appropriate on some services than others.
