Spent some time on my day off driving around. With rain in the forecast there was not a whole lot of activities to enjoy.
We ended up at Site 41. I was struck by the lack of truely panoramic images of the area and wanted to convey to people the lay of the land where our elected official decided that it’s ok to set up a dump. This is productive farm land sitting on top of the Alliston aquifer. It’s been called the cleanest water in the world and from the landscape that I saw, it’s easy to understand why.
Please show your support for stopping Site 41 any way you can. Here are some places to start.

The
Clovis culture is the first well-established culture in the Americas. It first shows up in the archaeological record around 11,200 years ago and extends until 10,800 years ago when it is mostly replaced by the Folsom technology.
To confuse matters however, sites have been popping up all across the Western Hemisphere that point at earlier occupations that push back occupation dates further in time. Those in North America that aren’t in Canada are more-or-less accepted. Only Monte Verde in South America is widely accepted.

VPS from Above

Looking down onto the Vertical Profiler System (VPS) from above after deployment to Barkley Upper Slope, 14 September 2010.
VPS Emerges

Hauled by rope, the VPS emerges from the depths after an 8-month sojourn in the 396m waters of Barkley Slope.
VPS Rescue Kit

This improvised kit was used to recover our Vertical Profiler System (VPS) from 396m of water at Barkley Slope. The VPS, which consists of a base platform resting on the seafloor and an instrumented float, had to be recovered because a malfunction prevented technicians from retracting the float.
Recovery was complicated because the float was partially deployed — some 10s of metres above the seafloor. Weights were used to lower it, then a rope tied to 4 white floats was released to the surface. This rope was then pulled using the ship’s winch to bring the VPS back to the surface.

Lewis Carroll in “The Hunting of the Snark”

Photographic self portrait by Lewis Carroll, and its inclusion into an illustration by Henry Holiday to Lewis Carroll’s The Hunting of the Snark
[top]: Henry Holiday: vectorized segment of an illustration (cut by Joseph Swain) to The Beaver’s Lesson in Lewis Carroll’s The Hunting of the Snark (1876)
[left]: Original
[middle]: Low pass filtered
[right]: Self portrait by Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (aka Lewis Carroll, May 1875) displayed in mirror view. (Credits for the photo used in the comparison: Watts Gallery, Compton, Guildford)
It should be considered that mirroring (swapping left and right) may have occured just because the engraver (Joseph Swain) reproduced the illustration directly from Dodgson’s photo. The wood block print then shows a mirror view. This applies to all mirror views cut by Swain. In other cases Holiday and/or Swain had to create intermediate drawings with mirrored images (or elements of images) in order not to have a mirror view in the print.
